2 shows in Melbourne

Hello

It’s been awhile. But I thought I should probably try and tell some people about some up coming shows.

Got some cheap flights to Melbourne and some people were nice enough to help me book shows so I will be playing at the following.

4 July @ Longplay with paddock and Heart Flew

6 July @ The Old Bar

I’m really looking forward to both shows. Hopefully I’m not sick when they happen, Kellie got sick they day before we left.

I might also play the open mic at the drunken poet tomorrow night as it’s just down the road.

Album Launch and Another Show

Its about time that I provide an update on the album launch and another show.

Its taken some time to sort out, but we will be launching the Curlew album at the Bearded Lady on Sunday 16 November.

Yes, this is the last day of the G20, yes its probably not the best and easiest date to launch an album. But I must admit I forgot.

I had original booked the launch for November 20. However the Bearded Lady had a request from a Greek band for that date. I wanted to help the venue out, as Cat the booking agent has been lovely to deal with, so I agreed to change our date. As circumstances changed, that band had to pull out and Cat was nice enough to suggest I play a solo show on that date.

Don’t worry to much about the G20, come out and see us play, it might take a touch more time to get there, but you might see Putin or Obama wonder in for a beer, who knows.

So the upcoming shows are as follows.

Nov 16 – Curlew Album Launch w/ Amateur Childbirth & The Scrapes

CURLEW Jpeg

Thanks heaps for the poster Julien, you’re the best

Nov 20 – Mark Zian w/ Dale Peachey (Dollar Bar) & Greg Charles (Charles Curse)

November 20

Thank you to Kellie for this poster.

I am really excited about both shows. The Curlew show will be like old times, just Callum and myself playing some songs from the album. For the solo show I will playing a mixture of I am not a Nihilist songs, some solo guitar stuff and a couple of newer songs that we have been working on for the next Curlew release.

As Nick is going away for a month for work we did some quick demos of the new songs, just in case he forgets his parts. Here is one of them.

Some News and A poem

Hello

The news:

Callum has returned from Japan, so tomorrow we will start practicing songs to start recording a new album, this time with Nick on bass. All of the new songs are really short, so it’s going to be a bit different for us, which is always a good thing.

In other news our album launch for Animal Urges will be on 20 November at the Bearded Lady, with guests Amateur Childbirth and The Scrapes. The album is already online, mainly because I hate sitting on things, but thought it would be good for us to launch it. Facebook events and posters etc are still to come.

Here is a poem just because.

The Bronze Clock

When I worked in an Australiana tourist store

My boss showed me the new souvenirs she had ordered

But the thing she was most excited about was this fake bronze clock,

Plastic Australian flag shaped with kangaroos embossed

The price 12.99

‘I hope you didn’t order many’ I said ‘Who would buy these?’

‘I ordered two boxes’ she said

and sold them all within the week

So now every time I wonder

if my opinion is right or not

I think of that bronze clock

Reviews & Show

As per my last post, we have a new album, we being Callum and I. I put it onto Bandcamp last month, but we are yet to launch it. Callum is off to Japan soon, so it will probably happen in September.

Good news though we have a show coming up this Saturday at Trainspotters with Black Vacation, Ciggie Witch, Blonde Tonues & Pare Ohm. It should be an excellent show.

https://www.facebook.com/events/778303552219830/

In other good news, we got a couple of reviews, have a read.

Sonic Masala

2RRR

I have always struggled to get my work reviewed, not a word was uttered about the last album, so its nice to get some feedback. I don’t know if feedback is the right word, but its nice to know that at least a couple of people have listened to it and actually given it some consideration. Art can be communicative and its really hard to talk to people when they don’t talk back. So thanks Brendan and Liza.

“Personal interaction is of vanishing significance”

I rarely update this blog.

I dislike blogs really. Blogs are masturbation and I need something that at least talks back. I don’t have the ambition to get all literate and try and get a following and a book deal for my bullshit hack of a blog.

The reason I am writing this is because, as I was fixing a Hannah Montana guitar which I picked up from Lifeline, my lovely girlfriend called me to say goodnight, after which she told me through text message to update my blog. Mmmm technology.

So here I am, alone and in front of a computer partaking in some one-sided interaction. Sounds a lot like masturbation to me.

There is news I guess.

Curlew has some more songs, were are trying to record them, we have played shows. Below are some results. A video of Fitness First from the Zoo. Thanks Nick. A studio recording of Cobwebs. Thanks David. A live video of Callus. Thanks Josh.

Now….Back to Hannah

Exeunt

Curlew – Fitness First from Fine Goods Productions on Vimeo.

Curlew – 26.04.2012 from Joshua Watson on Vimeo.

Blogs are Hard

Haven’t posted for awhile, sorry, busy living life. I find it hard to be bothered writing a blog to share my life with you (probably no one) as I have a real flesh and blood person to share my life with.

This person has gone to Norway for a month and to celebrate her and her return I will be making a cheesy album of love songs in her memory.

I have already written 4 of the 5 songs and am hoping to have it recorded and released within the next 2 weeks.

See I don’t only write depressing music. (Just mostly)

Are you alright Mark?

P.S: You may or may not be able to purchase said music from bandcamp for $80.

P.S: If anybody would like to proof read my blogs, feel free to send me corrections, and I may or may not care.

Psychic foretells a future in landscape gardening

My work place is a bit strange, my boss is extremely understanding and I work most days with only women who treat me either as their child or little brother. Basically I get teased all day. But I like it.

A few weeks ago the ladies at work were talking about Psychics and thought it would be a good idea to get a Psychic to come in and give us all readings. I agreed.

For those that know me I am extremely curious and quite a large skeptic and did a little bit of research before the session, mainly into cold reading.

So we sit down and she explains to me how it all works.

The information comes from universal consciousness that is somehow all stored in a central location (maybe in the heavens). She has the ability to access or channel this information from three different spiritual guides. She says its a bit like downloading. Today’s guide is Merlin. How original. Only her name for him of course.

So she starts…… lets just call her Jill for the purposes of this post.

Jill: (Meditates and makes contact with the guide)

Mark: (As per Jill’s instructions Mark becomes a white clear light as all of his Chakras light up, Mark becomes grounded by said light)

She proceeded to tell me the following:

  • You are in the wrong job
  • I can see a course of night study, something to do with plants or animals
  • Maybe landscape gardening, you dreamt of this when you were younger (unfortunately, not Jill)
  • Building? Animals? Zookeeper?
  • Maybe a Ranger?
  • Merlin is showing me a beach (maybe a Ranger on Fraser Island)
  • You need to be inside
  • When this man is inside something in him withers
  • Im seeing something like a Zoo, breading animals or whatever.
  • You need to look for a job in maybe a wildlife park, if it gets offered to you take it.
  • He is saying to me, although you like to be by yourself there is a girl that shares your interest.
  • Not sure if she is in your life now but she has kaki shorts on and blonde hair. You are walking along the beach together and she has boots on.
  • Don’t get in an old Red or Burgundy sedan (Best mate has one of these)
  • So much is hinging on the decisions that you make soon.
  • Look around for a better superannuation fund

In the end I think that she is good at what she does but I don’t believe she has Psychic abilities. She got some interesting hits, but after listening back, I think I helped her along way too much. Was an interesting experience and I was happy I tried it.

Later that night, my friend Amorina decided that she no longer wanted to sing on my next album. Which I have just finished writing by the way. So if anybody knows a good female singer let me know.

Deleting Facebook

As of this Sunday, I will be deleting my facebook accounts.

There are many reasons but mainly I feel that I waste a lot of time flicking through nothing on facebook. Every time writing gets hard it seems that facebook provides the perfect mind numbing distraction.

Some friends have said just have some self control. But how can they talk they smoke. I have been telling myself for awhile that I need it to promote my music, but the truth is that most people don’t take notice on facebook. They have too many friends, too much information and most don’t even decline event invites, and those that accept, let alone choose to respond at all, never usually turn up.

On a personal note, facebook really does nothing for me socially, other than making me a little more distant and distracted when spending time with the people that are important to me.

Hopefully now with one less distraction, I will find more time to blog. I have also decided to keep my twitter account and might try my hand at some twitter poetry.

On a more serious note, I have been keeping up the fishing and today I caught a crab. No pots needed, just reeled him in, too bad he was undersize.

I have also added a mailing list so please sign up.

I have returned

So….. It has been a long time between posts. I will give you the short version.

  • Launched Album
  • Website Hacked
  • Fixed by Ricky Tang

I really didn’t need to use dot points. But many wonderful personal things have happened between those things. All mixed with my general fixation on bullshit.

Not really into Christmas… so thats all I’m going to say about that, but I am off work for two weeks, hoping to finish the songs for my next album and try to relax.

Speaking of relaxing, I have been fishing 3 times in the last 3 days. Never really catch much.

Trip 1: Large Toad/Puffer Fish – Nick tells me that this is not a fish and is therefore counted as negative 1 point.

Trip 2: Poolie catches a large rock. As seen below.

IMG_0535IMG_0538

Trip 3: Caught a tiny Bream and two toad fish in the cast net. Got bored and decided to feed the fish with the chicken breast we were using as bait. Just a side note on that, the use of chicken as bait was my Dad’s idea. He says that its cheaper and better for bait than prawns, I am yet to be convinced. Its just strange trying to ‘catch dinner’ with what would have been a fine dinner in the first place.

The interesting thing that I did find out about chicken breast however is that it is much better for skimming than rocks.
